Housing built prior to 1978 could have Lead-Based Paint

BY 1996 FEDERAL LAW REQUIRES:

LANDLORDS to disclose known information on lead-based paint hazards before leases take effect. Leases will include a federal form about lead-based paint.

SELLERS to disclose known information on lead-based paint hazards before selling a house. Sales contracts will include a federal form about lead-based paint in the building.. Buyers will have up to 10 days to check for lead hazards.

RENOVATORS to give consumers a pamplet produced by the U.S. EPA entitled "Protect Your Family From Lead in Your Home".


HOW CAN LEAD GET IN OUR BODY?

  • By putting hands in mouth after touching objects that are covered with lead dust.
  • By eating paint chips or soil that contains lead.
  • Breathing lead dust (especially during renovations that disturb painted surfaces).

HOW TO FIND OUT IF YOUR CHILD HAS A HIGH LEVEL OF LEAD

A simple blood test can detect high levels of lead. Ask your doctor or call 1-800-LEAD-FYI or for hearing impaired call TDD1-800-526-5456.
